Project Timeline Oct 2016 - Dec 2016 Categories Data Visualization Tools OpenRefine, CartoDB, Illustrator
In this fun mapping project with CartoDB, we tried to find evidences that shows ufo has been found in different areas in the world and visualized the data. The mapping experiment shows there are quite large amounts of findings that proves UFO's existence with stories from witnesses. Let's see!
Whether you believe it or not, there is a large amount of data that people have witnessed UFOs.
This data storytelling and mapping project delivers the most unimaginable information into a visual mapping.
Believing or not, those Unidentified flying object have observed by people from all over the world, through ancient times and modern days.
How people see and interpret unexplained phenomenon of daily life, which UFO and aliens could be the symbolic representatives that illustrate the idea. We wanted to present a dataset that shows how people see and interpret unexplained phenomenon of daily life, which UFO and aliens could be the symbolic representatives that illustrate the idea. The final map shows bubble charts on the world map which represents the numbers of UFO sighting by each location. Also, viewers can see the entire features UFO sighting has been exponentially increasing as time goes by. Also users can simply see the change of the amount of in UFO sightings by dragging a timeline bar in this interactive map.
We refined the dataset that we found on Wikipedia, using Spreadsheet and OpenRefine which is a data cleaning & mining tool.
We sorted quantitative, nominal, categorical data to encode them into visual.
What we wanted to covey through this interactive mapping was the observations of UFOs through different time and locations from all over the world. On the world map, the green circle variables represent UFO's appearance observed by people.
By the size of the circle, you can see the number of frequency that UFOs appeared on the particular area.
As you hover each circle, you can see the detailed information including the event name, country, location, date and relevant story shared by witnesses.
Telling Stories with Data
Ufologist classified people's interaction with UFOs in 7 levels depending on how they closely witness or contact an unidentified flying object.
Hynek's Scale is the system of classification behind which was defined by astronomer and UFO researcher J. Allen Hynek.
There were no exact quantified information of this scales in our current data, but we found some quantifiable information in people's observation stories.
ex) "Police inspector Kriel claimed to have observed an approaching UFO while travelling on the N3 freeway, 70 km north of Warden in the eastern Free State province. The orange, oval-shaped light was fitted with two cupolas, one above and another below, and was wide enough to cover four lanes of the freeway. After a close approach the craft receded again. A follow up report claimed that the vicinity is known for moving light apparitions."
In order to create more visually interesting and intriguing data mapping with interactive visual storytelling, we thought it would be interesting to apply this scale to our current UFO sightings data, mapping out the data up to 1 to 7 Hynek's Scale from Nocturnal Lights to Close Encounters of The Fourth Kind.
